Library concert to feature Mathis and ‘The Preacher’

Clayton Mathis and Stephen Pecot, “The Preacher,” will grace the stage at the Apalachicola Margaret Key Public Library on Wednesday, Jan. 15, from 6 to 7:30 ET.

Mathis, who hails from Gaffney, South Carolina where he developed his love of music.  His grandmother tried to teach him piano but he quit at age 12 and three years later tried guitar lessons but gave up after he couldn’t seem to grasp the concept of “practice.”

His love of music continued and he listened to genres of music from Ernest Tubb to Wu-Tang Clan to Guns N’ Roses to Thievery Corporation.  In 2013, when he found his way to Apalachicola, he was so inspired by his surroundings that he decided to pick up the guitar again.  He now writes and performs music, weaving around topics such as religion, politics, unanswered questions, relationships, drinking, love, and family.

His brother produced his debut album, “Welcome to the In Between,”  in 2020 in Columbia, South Carolina.  A brewer/bar owner by day, you may find him slugging back a few beers and strumming a guitar on a corner or in one of the local bars.

Pecot, the priest at Trinity Episcopal Church in Apalachicola, is a New Orleans native who has played guitar and bass in numerous rock and roll bands for 40 years.  He, his wife, Travis,  and several animals, including two horses, moved to Apalachicola in 2023.

PALS, the Friends of the Library, transforms the library into a listening room where the music is enjoyed in the comfort of this unusual venue. The concert is free and is presented by PALS, with the financial support of the 2022 Porchfest Committee. Refreshments will be available by donation.
