Educator society inducts four new members

The local chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society of Key Women Educators recently held an induction, welcoming four new members and reactivating one.

Inducted were two teachers from the Apalachicola Bay Charter School, Danielle Layne and Madison Minacci, and two from the Franklin County School, Kathryn Strunk and Tara Klink.

Layne’s mother Cathy Creamer, who teaches at First Baptist School, reactivated her membership.

“I am so thrilled these educators have joined our society and I look forward to their contributions,” said Membership Chair Missy Cumbie, a founding member of the local chapter.

DKG is an international organization of active and retired educators who are committed to advancing women educators, as well as being advocates for education. There are 150,000 members worldwide in over 3,000 chapters and 17 countries. In Florida, there are more than 1,600 members in 57 chapters and six districts. The local chapter, Delta Kappa, is in District I which has 10 chapters and 300 members.

Delta Kappa chapter will have their Spring Induction in April. All Franklin County schools have members in the local chapter, so interested teachers can reach out to them for additional information.

“DKG does so much for educators and for others,” said Chapter President Elinor Mount-Simmons. “We offer professional development awards to educators who want to attend conferences, or take courses for advanced degrees. We also offer education grants to help teachers finance classroom projects, as well as leadership trainings, disaster relief funds and great sisterhood, just to name a few of the perks of membership.

“On the local level, our chapter gives a scholarship each year to a Franklin County High School graduate, and we have annual community service projects which have included Toys for Tots, Christmas Giving Tree programs, and a visit to the Taunton Children’s Home,” she said. “Retired teachers can also become DKG members, I joined in 2018 after retiring from FCS.”
