Forgotten Coast En Plein Air unites art and community

The 20th annual Forgotten Coast En Plein Air wrapped up another inspiring year last month, celebrating the breathtaking landscapes and rich culture of Florida’s Forgotten Coast.

This premier plein air festival brought together talented artists, passionate collectors, and engaged community members, all sharing a love for artistic expression and coastal heritage.

The event kicked off March 15 with the Quickdraw Competition held at Windmark Beach, a fast-paced challenge where artists had only two hours to create a finished painting before presenting it for judging. The 2024 winners, judged by Mary Erickson, were first place Kathleen B. Hudson, from Colorado Springs, Colorado; second place Jeremy Sams, from Archdale, North Carolina; and third place Richie Vios, from Austin, Texas.

A beloved tradition, the Plein Air Church Service, took place along the scenic Apalachicola riverfront Sunday morning, March 16. Following the Blessing of the Easels, artists spread out to capture the morning service on canvas, embracing the serene beauty of the moment.

The festival also continued its commitment to fostering future artists through Student Day, held March 19 at the Mill Pond in Apalachicola. Budding young painters were paired with professional artists for one-on-one guidance, allowing them to experience the magic of plein air painting firsthand.

This milestone year would not have been possible without the artists, sponsors, volunteers, and collectors who make this event a success year after year. Their dedication helps preserve and promote the plein air tradition while strengthening the artistic ties that connect the entire Forgotten Coast.

From Mexico Beach to Alligator Point, Forgotten Coast En Plein Air bridges communities through art, celebrating the region’s natural beauty and historic charm. Recognized as one of the nation’s top plein air festivals, the event continues to attract renowned artists and visitors from across the country.

Mark your calendars! The 21st Annual Forgotten Coast En Plein Air is set for March 20-29, 2026, promising another unforgettable experience for artists and art lovers alike.
