Quilters lend financial support to libraries

Hi Y’all, Memorial Day, May 26 is coming up. While we are getting ready for picnics, partying, and all the fun that goes with a holiday, let’s remember the servicemen and women who sacrificed their lives to protect their country, their families, and all of us.

Camp Gordon Johnston American Legion Post 82 will be involved in special events on Memorial Day. All are welcome to volunteer for the placing of flags at both cemeteries in Carrabelle, to start at 8 a.m. ET. More information will be posted on Facebook. At 10 a.m., the Apalachicola Memorial Day ceremony will be held at Veterans Memorial Plaza, where this year’s speaker will be Dr. Gordon Sumner, a veteran of Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada, and a recipient of the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. The Franklin County School ROTC will present the honor guard at the ceremony. Tamara’s on the Go food truck will be available for refreshments. The Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will be taking its travel wall showing Franklin County veterans.

American Legion Post 82 in Lanark Village on Oak Street will have its flag retirement and Memorial Day ceremonies from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. At 5 p.m. the Post will close to those who are not veterans or members for a private event.

The Lanark Village Wandering Stars Quilters showed off again. With their talents, they created a quilt hanging “Sunset Dock” for raffle, and $3,000 was raised. That donation was presented to the Friends of Franklin County, Florida Public Libraries. Sissy Girtman and Judy Rundel, members of the Wandering Stars, last week presented the gift to Brenda Humphrey, Kathleen Oman, and Marian Morris, representing the Friends. Lanark Village is very proud of the Wandering Stars. If you or anyone you know is interested in quilting, the club is open to new members. The Wandering Stars meet at Chillas Hall on Heffernan Drive on Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. For info call Girtman at (406) 660-0760.

There will be no Bingo in Lanark Village until June 4. Most other event schedules will continue, and I will keep you informed of any changes.

Love Lanark!
