Plenty of ways to show honor on Memorial Day
Hi Y’all,
Happy Memorial Day, I’m happy to have freedom because freedom isn’t free. For those of you who receive your news on the web page, which is earlier than the physical paper publication. Here is a bit of an update, there will be special events on Memorial Day that the American Legion, Post 82, Camp Gordon Johnston, will be involved in. All are welcome to volunteer for the placing of flags at both cemeteries in Carrabelle. This will start at 8 a.m. ET; meet at Evergreen Cemetery.
At 10 a.m., the Apalachicola Memorial Day ceremony will be at Veterans Memorial Plaza, on Market Street. The Franklin County School Cadet Core will present the honor guard at the ceremony; Tamara’s food truck will be available for refreshments. The Camp Gordon Johnston Museum will take its travel wall showing Franklin County veterans.
American Legion Post 82 in Lanark Village on Oak Street will have its Flag Retirement and Memorial Day ceremonies from 2:30 till 4:30 p.m. At 5 p.m., the Post will close to the public for a private event.
The Lanark Village Association has announced that starting Memorial Day, Chillas Hall Coffee Time will not be open until further notice. Tuesday Game Night will continue starting at 6 p.m., and Thirsty Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. Bingo on Wednesday will start back up on June 4.
The St. James – Lanark Fire Department has a monthly, every third Monday, at 6 p.m. The next meeting will be June 16 with an ice cream social. The last meeting was poorly attended. The fire department was excited to show off their gently used/new certified fire engine, and they had ice cream for those who attended.

For years, the residents and property owners have not had a fire department. One of the biggest concerns for some was their insurance rates going up; that shows how important this fire department is to our community. Not to mention our safety and well-being. To get that insurance cost down, the fire department volunteers, and equipment must be certified. The insurance companies make that determination, and the fire department needs your help to succeed. One way the community can help is by going to meetings to find out what is needed. Your fire department is training weekly for you.
Bears are still out and about. Please secure your garbage. Thank you.
Love Lanark!
