FSU pianists to close out Ilse Newell series Saturday

Performing Saturday, June 7 as an add-on to the Ilse Newell Concert Series at Trinity Episcopal Church in Apalachicola are pianists Bang-Shyuan “Ben” Chen and Kwan Yi “Kylie” Ho, both graduate students at the Florida State University College of Music. 

The two-part program entitled “Narratives in Piano Sonatas” features classical compositions specifically chosen by the performers.

Kylie, praised for both technical virtuosity and musicality in her performances, has won numerous piano competitions and is a dedicated music educator. She earned her doctor of music degree from FSU studying under Dr. David Kalhous, and received her master of music degree at Indiana University where she studied under Emile Naoumoff, the last disciple of Nadia Boulanger.

Ben Chen earned a prestigious merit-based scholarship for his bachelor of music at Manhattan School of Music with full tuition waivers and stipends for his masters of music studies at Indiana University and doctor of music studies at Florida State University. A dedicated music educator and winner of multiple piano competitions, he has been a popular teacher and student at FSU.



Both Kylie and Ben are excited to share and engage with the audience about the narratives and concepts behind the music.

The performance begins at 6 p.m. ET with light refreshments served after the show where attendees can meet the performers. Students are free, others $20 in advance at inconcertapalachicola.org or $25 at the door.
