Ghostwalk boosts Chesnut Cemetery preservation

Apalachicola’s Chesnut Cemetery, considered one of the oldest and best preserved graveyards in Florida, will get a healthy boost thanks to the generosity of those who took in the Oct. 29 Ghostwalk.

Staffed by members of the non-profit Apalachicola Area Historical Society, with the support of actors from the Panhandle Players, the Ghostwalk, held every October and again in the spring, raised about $1,100 for cemetery improvements.

Shan Raetzloff, who chairs the society’s cemetery committee, oversaw the Ghostwalk, which included the volunteer support of a crew who helped clean the cemetery in advance of the event, and who served as guides for those visitors who took in the nine “risen dead” whose lives were portrayed by the actors.
