Seahawks ready for Aug. 20 opener

It’s not the largest roster Coach Dirk Strunk has had, and not the most seasoned, but it could be the most dedicated.

“They work hard,” said Strunk, as he reviewed the prospects for the 2021 Seahawks, which returns six offensive starters, and six from the defense, on a roster of about 30 players.

“The biggest thing is depth. We’ve got to have enough depth this year to be able to spot rest,” he said.

He said with COVID striking last season, many of the younger players saw playing time, so he hopes to capitalize on that.

Key returning players in the skilled positions are Larry Winchester, Wil Varnes, Wyatt and Cody Abercrombie, Evan Stanley, Cooper Bowden, Mason Moses and Hunter Duval.

“We’ve tweaked the offense a little to make it easier for the kids,” Strunk said.

He said the middle school squad has about 20 players on it, as that talent rises in the ranks.

Assisting with coaching duties are Chuck Syverson, who works with receivers and helps implement coaching by committee; co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach Eddie Money; offensive line coach Jake Montebano; linebacker coach and co-defensive coordinator Will McCullough; and Kelsey Jones, who works with the defensive backfield.

The boys worked this summer at 7:15 a.m., and these days are on the practice field at 3:15 p.m.

The Seahawks open the season with two away games. On Aug. 20, they’ll travel to Jacksonville to take on Harvest Community High School, and then on Aug. 27, they’ll take to the road to take on Bell High School near Gainesville.

Franklin County competes in Class 1A Region 2, which also includes Blountstown, Hamilton County (Jasper), Jefferson County (Monticello), Liberty County (Bristol), Madison County, Port St. Joe, Sneads and Wewahitchka.
