Seahawk baseball teams celebrate successful season
The Franklin County Schools’ baseball program closed out a successful season with a banquet at the Carrabelle Christian Center May 31.
The middle school team under the direction of Tyler Poloronis, the youngest team in Kevin Cox’s program and one sure to make a splash in the years to come, was honored.
Sadiq Jones was named Offensive Player of the Year, while Nolan Alford earned Defensive Player of the Year honors. Ashton Gilbert was Most Improved, and Pitcher of the Year was Khayden Drake.
For the junior varsity squad, the Defensive Player of the Year was Logan Bentley, and Offensive Player of the Year Will Luberto. Will Chipman was Most Improved, Alex Sterling was Pitcher of the Year, and Brayden McCall was the Most Outstanding Player.
For the varsity squad, which finished second in regular season district play and advanced to the regional semifinals, with a season record of 18-7, the Scholar Athlete award was earned by Dane Mallon. The Most Improved player was Chase Millender.
Pitcher of the Year honors went to sophomore Cody Abercrombie, who worked 47 innings, with a record of 6-2 and an earned run average of 1.04 as he struck out 65.
The Offensive Player of the Year was junior Evan Stanley, who posted a .368 batting average as he nailed 28 hits, including nine doubles and one homer, and had 22 runs batted in.
Defensive Player of the Year was senior Wil Varnes, who fielded 96 percent of his chances, and had but two errors,
The team’s Most Outstanding Player was junior Chase Crum, who batted .371 with 26 hits, including seven doubles, and 14 runs batted in. As a pitcher he went 2-1, with a 1.98 ERA.
The Most Valuable Player was senior Gage Boone, who batted .293, drove in 17 runs and had 17 hits, including six doubles and one home run.
Boone, Abercrombie, Crum and Varnes were all named to All-State teams.

David Adlerstein, The Apalachicola Times’ digital editor, started with the news outlet in January 2002 as a reporter.
Prior to then, David Adlerstein began as a newspaperman with a small Boston weekly, after graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He later edited the weekly Bellville Times, and as business reporter for the daily Marion Star, both not far from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.
In 1995, he moved to South Florida, and worked as a business reporter and editor of Medical Business newspaper. In Jan. 2002, he began with the Apalachicola Times, first as reporter and later as editor, and in Oct. 2020, also began editing the Port St. Joe Star.
