Parade to honor Ella Speed’s 102nd birthday Saturday
The Speed Family would like to announce the birthday of their Mother, Ella Breedlove Speed, on Saturday, Sept. 24.
Mrs. Speed was born 102 years ago in Apalachicola to James and Ella Breedlove. Her parents raised six children at 183 12th Street. They were Gladys Breedlove Beamon, Aldonia Breedlove Dawson, Ella Breedlove Speed, Ersie Breedlove Millender, Dorothy Breedlove Hill, and one son James (Jimmy) Breedlove. One sibling, John Breedlove, died during childbirth.
Mrs. Speed was married to the late Willie Burghart Speed for 68 years. They had four children: Willie (Bill) Speed, Allyson Speed, Oryan Speed, and Gayle Speed Ringo. Two of her children, Bill Speed and Gayle Speed Ringo, along with her husband, are now deceased.
Well-wishers who desire may drive by her home at 183 13th Street on Saturday, Sept. 24 at noon. The family will have a small parade going down 13th Street as Mother Speed sits on her porch. Participants are requested to line up on 13th Street and Avenue K to avoid the traffic going down 12th Street.

David Adlerstein, The Apalachicola Times’ digital editor, started with the news outlet in January 2002 as a reporter.
Prior to then, David Adlerstein began as a newspaperman with a small Boston weekly, after graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He later edited the weekly Bellville Times, and as business reporter for the daily Marion Star, both not far from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.
In 1995, he moved to South Florida, and worked as a business reporter and editor of Medical Business newspaper. In Jan. 2002, he began with the Apalachicola Times, first as reporter and later as editor, and in Oct. 2020, also began editing the Port St. Joe Star.
