Hot times, cold weather mark Half Shell Hustle
It was sunny and cold, just the way runners like it, and Saturday morning’s 5K Half Shell Hustle went off without a hitch or a cramp.
Master race organizer Shelley Shepard attracted a field of 100 – 57 females and 43 males – as they took off at 8 a.m. and ran throughout the city.
Topping the field was Duane Evans, who ran the course in 19:52.6. Top performing female was Franklin County’s own Eden Keene, who following the race served as a volunteer for the Apalachicola Oyster Cook-off.
“It was a great race, it felt good,” she said. “I love running in cold temperatures so it was a nice race. It wasn’t my personal best but it was good for my current conditioning level.”
Keene decided not to run with pooches she has run with in the past. “I left the dogs at home because it was too cold,” she said. “They don’t like to run when it’s too cold.”

Meet the Editor
David Adlerstein, The Apalachicola Times’ digital editor, started with the news outlet in January 2002 as a reporter.
Prior to then, David Adlerstein began as a newspaperman with a small Boston weekly, after graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He later edited the weekly Bellville Times, and as business reporter for the daily Marion Star, both not far from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.
In 1995, he moved to South Florida, and worked as a business reporter and editor of Medical Business newspaper. In Jan. 2002, he began with the Apalachicola Times, first as reporter and later as editor, and in Oct. 2020, also began editing the Port St. Joe Star.
