Bikers raise money to prevent vets’ suicides

Hi Y’all:

On Tuesday, April 23 a roar went through Franklin County announcing the important cause of the Unity Ride Veterans Suicide Prevention efforts. More than 60 motorcycle riders of the American Legion Riders started in Pensacola making the trip east all the way to the Camp Gordon Johnston American Legion Post 82 in Lanark. Several riders from Post 82 met the group in Apalachicola. At Legion Post 82 the riders were served a spaghetti lunch which they were happy to have. After lunch there was a brief ceremony before the group headed on to Tallahassee.

This is a yearly effort which started with bringing awareness to the community at the beginning of the year. The Legion Post 82 efforts were headed up by Legion Riders’ Director Remona Larsen, and Jeff Allen, who worked tirelessly with fundraisers almost every week. Allen always kept that contribution jar visible. Efforts continue through the year. This year Legion Post 82 was able to contribute $4,100 to the Unity Ride Veterans Suicide Prevention efforts. Post 82 was presented with a certificate of appreciation by Rider Jason Skobel, the head rider.

Any venture as large as this one takes helping hands along the way. For Franklin County our law enforcement was there for traffic control. Thank you to the Apalachicola and Carrabelle police departments, and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, for your assistance in making this a successful ride.

The Lanark Village Golf Club will be having their monthly yard sale this Saturday, May 4 on Heffernan Drive across from Chillas Hall. The golf club also provides a parking lot for Chillas Hall and the post office. They also have a shuffleboard court. It is not just about golf. Please help the club maintain these amenities for our community.

The Legion will have a Cinco de Mayo Night on Sunday, May 5, at Post 82 in Lanark on Oak Street. They will be serving up nachos supreme with ground beef or chicken, there will be drink specials and two raffles with some great stuff to benefit the K-9s for Warriors program. For more information call the Legion at 850-697-9998.

To Lanark Village residents and property owners, the bears are still living here. Please secure your cans. For property owners who have renters, it is the responsibility of the owners and the management company to see that your renters have a place to put their garbage secure from the bears.
