Golden Scallop Contest returns to St. Joe Bay
The Point South Marina in Port St. Joe has injected some additional fun into the 2024 scallop season with its second annual “Golden Scallop Contest,” which will offer swimmers and snorkelers alike something extra to search for during the annual hunt, which runs through Sept. 24.
Six “golden scallops” have been placed in the bay as a sort of Willy Wonka-inspired treasure hunt. Those who discover them are encouraged to bring them back to the marina where they will be rewarded with a $100 shopping spree in the marina’s outfitter shop.
“We did this for the first time last year and the community really responded to it, so bringing it back was a no-brainer,” said Preston Sutter, general manager for the marina. “Scallop season has always been a special time here and the Golden Scallop Contest adds another fun element to, what for many families is, a cherished annual tradition.”
The marina opened in 2022 after an extensive reconstruction following Hurricane Michae. The marina’s 252 dry slips, 48 wet slips and outfitter shop have become a popular gathering place for the water-loving community
“We want to be more than a place to store boats,” Sutter said. “This is a place where families and friends can come to gather and access the great waterways of our area. The Golden Scallop Contest gives us another reason to bring people together to get out on the water during scallop season.”
The Golden Scallop Contest will conclude when all six golden scallops are discovered.

Prior to then, David Adlerstein began as a newspaperman with a small Boston weekly, after graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He later edited the weekly Bellville Times, and as business reporter for the daily Marion Star, both not far from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.
