Forgotten Coast Fishing Report
Triggerfish are being caught in 80 to 100 feet of water with a double drop rig using squid. Bonita are also being caught pulling a Rapala X-Rap 12 and Rapala Husky Magnum 15 . Red grouper are being caught on bonita strips also using a double drop rig made with 60-pound mono and a 6/0 circle hook. Reports of sailfish have been really good around the car bodies; islander lures in blue and white are the bait of choice.
Scallop season kicked off last week in St. Joe Bay. To say the bay was busy is an understatement, so if you fish you’ll have to get out there early. With that being said, the redfish bite has been really good, with Carolina rigging cut bait. The tarpon bite has also been good out on the Cape. If you’re using live bait, small blue crabs, as well as live mullet, these are the keys to a memorable trip.
Gator season began this last weekend and it got off to a good start. John Jones of Wewahitchka bagged a nice one that measured 9-feet 4-inches and weighed 350 pounds Congratulations, John. Water temps are pretty warm right now, so fishing has slowed. Get out there after a cool rain or first thing in the morning and that should improve your chances.

David Adlerstein, The Apalachicola Times’ digital editor, started with the news outlet in January 2002 as a reporter.
Prior to then, David Adlerstein began as a newspaperman with a small Boston weekly, after graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He later edited the weekly Bellville Times, and as business reporter for the daily Marion Star, both not far from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.
In 1995, he moved to South Florida, and worked as a business reporter and editor of Medical Business newspaper. In Jan. 2002, he began with the Apalachicola Times, first as reporter and later as editor, and in Oct. 2020, also began editing the Port St. Joe Star.
