A celebration of service
From one corner of the Forgotten Coast to the other, Franklin and Gulf counties took time out on Veterans Day to honor the service of their many veterans of military service.
Franklin County Schools held their program at the high school Nov. 9, and the First Baptist Christian Schools held their on Monday morning, Nov. 11.
At 11:11 a.m. on Nov. 11, at the Veterans Park at Beacon Hill, John C. Gainous VFW Post 10069, American Legion Post 116, and their respective auxiliaries hosted a Veterans Day program, followed by a lunch back at the port.
At the same time, the St. George Lighthouse Association, in partnership with THE SGI Veterans Reveille Group and Apalachicola’s American Legion Post 106, held the Veterans Day ceremony in Lighthouse Park, with U.S. Air Force Col. Tyler A. “Bjork” Niebuhr, commander of the 325th Operations Group, 325th Fighter Wing, at Tyndall Air Force Base, as speaker.
Later that afternoon, at the North Port St. Joe Veterans Monument, a community ceremony was highlighted by the presentation of the Staff Sgt Clifford C. Sims Heroism Award, named for a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor, to Chief Master Sgt of the Air Force Marvin Davis.
The ceremony featured a community choir, as well as a recognition and presentation of veterans and their families by R. A. Driesbach Sr. Lodge #77.
Meet the Editor
David Adlerstein, The Apalachicola Times’ digital editor, started with the news outlet in January 2002 as a reporter.
Prior to then, David Adlerstein began as a newspaperman with a small Boston weekly, after graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He later edited the weekly Bellville Times, and as business reporter for the daily Marion Star, both not far from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.
In 1995, he moved to South Florida, and worked as a business reporter and editor of Medical Business newspaper. In Jan. 2002, he began with the Apalachicola Times, first as reporter and later as editor, and in Oct. 2020, also began editing the Port St. Joe Star.
