Violin, piano duo to open 40th anniversary year

The Lopez Tabor Duo returns to Apalachicola for the 40th anniversary of the Ilse Newell Concert Series this Sunday, Jan. 26 at 4 p.m. ET at Trinity Episcopal Church, 79 Sixth Street.

The duo of violinist Alfonso Lopez, and pianist Michelle Tabor, have performed as part of the concert series every few years for many seasons, and have performed and toured together in the southeastern U.S. and Venezuela since 2004.

Lopez, a conductor, teacher, and composer who is the concertmaster of the Venezuela Symphony Orchestra, the national and principal orchestra, has been nominated twice, in 2013 and 2017, to receive a Latin Grammy award.

Tabor, who grew up in Venezuela and now lives in Tallahassee, holds doctorate, master’s, and bachelor’s degrees in music from Florida State University, the University of Denver, and Tulane University.

The first part of the program features European composers, Johannes Brahms, a German who worked mostly in Vienna, Austria, and is considered one of the most important figures of the 19th century Romantic era; and Isaac Albeniz, a Spaniard who was interested in promoting Spanish culture and folklore through his music.

The second part of the program features composers from the Americas: William Grant Still, a prominent Afro-American composer whose music was influenced by blues and jazz; pieces by Andres Sas, a Peruvian composer heavily influenced by Inca musical and short pieces that consist of a famous Brazilian samba, a well-known Argentine tango, and works by Lopez showing the inspirations of Caribbean rhythms.

Tickets may be purchased in advance at inconcertapalachicola.org for $20 or at the door for $25. A reception with food and drinks follows the performance. Proceeds from the non-profit Ilse Newell Fund for the Performing Arts go towards covering the cost of talent, receptions, and the continuation of the concert series.
