John Nathan “Choppy” Hendels, 71, passed away on September 19, 2023, after a brief but hard-fought battle with Glioblastoma.
He was born April 28, 1952 in Apalachicola, FL to Cottie and Mildred Hendels. Growing up, he spent most of his time outdoors swimming in the bay, going up the river and playing sports. He excelled in football and was part of the Chapman High School 1968 state championship team.
He married his wife of 42 years, Rachial Creamer Hendels, in 1981. They built a life in Franklin County, and he enjoyed a long career on the water oystering. His favorite years oystering were worked alongside his brother Chris. In 2013, he and Rachial retired and moved to Tallahassee, FL. In retirement, he enjoyed being near his daughter, Alishia, and granddaughter, Emily. He and Emily had a special bond and he loved taking her to the playground, playing outside, and just doing anything that made her happy. His retirement years were spent enjoying his family and being the best husband, daddy, and pawpaw, he could be.
He is survived by his wife Rachial Hendels, his daughter Alishia Piotrowski (husband Joe), his granddaughter Emily Piotrowski, brothers George Hendels (wife Alisa) and Chris Hendels (late Vonnie), his sister Debbie Cox (late Donnie) and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents Cottie and Mildred Hendels and his brother Louis Wayne “Rhino” Hendels.
In following his wishes, no funeral services will be held.
