Date of Death
Nancy Pearline Butler Segree Coker, age 92, passed away in her sleep at 1:07 A.M. Jul. 2, 2023, at Bayou Pines Care Center in LaMarque, Tx. She was born on Jan. 7, 1931 to parents George W. Butler and Pearlie Melvin Butler in Apalachicola, Fl., where she grew up. She graduated from Chapman High School in 1949, where she was a member of the National Honor Society and the Student Council, Editor in Chief of the “Chapman Shark”, “Most Popular Girl”, “Friendliest Girl”, cheerleader and Miss Chapman High.
Nancy married Harry L. Coker, Jr. on Jan. 10, 1954 and reared his 3 children and her 2 sons in LaMarque and Texas City, Tx. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Texas City for 60 years. While bringing up 5 children, she managed to be involved with their school activities, and ceramics, paint-by-number, knitting, quilting and other artistic endeavors. She held the offices of President and Secretary of the Galveston Women’s Propeller Club and was a member of the Retired Pilots Wives Association. She was always willing to help wherever help was needed and had a great smile, as Frank Sinatra said in his song “Nancy with the Laughing Face”.
Fishing was her favorite pastime and she knew how to catch, clean, cook and enjoy all kinds of seafood, ready to jump in with her filet knife, oyster knife or crab knife at a moment’s notice. She was really top chef when it came to seafood gumbo, her favorite meal to cook for all her family and friends at get-togethers.
There were plenty of family vacations to places like Apalachicola, Fl. every year, camping at various state and national parks, visits to Astroworld, and uncountable fishing and crabbing trips. After all of their children grew up and moved out, Nancy and Harry expanded their travels to include world-wide destinations, including Australia, Europe, the Americas and the Promised Land.
To her, everyone was a friend and she will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Nancy is survived by her son Terrell G. “Terry” Coker, son Oma W. Coker and wife Sharon and family, daughter Mary E.
