ECCC volunteers share new year’s baskets
The benefits of volunteering can be enormous.
If you are looking for a cause to get involved in, Elder Care Community Council of Franklin County, ECCC, needs you. All it takes is one hour a week, over the lunch hour to join us to deliver meals to homebound older adults.
ECCC’s mission is to bridge the gaps in services for those over age 55 in Franklin County. This year starts off with continuing to prepare meals and assure that no senior is going hungry. Please join in and help us by volunteering and giving to others.
Many studies have proven that volunteering reduces stress, keeps you mentally stimulated and provides a sense of purpose. Volunteering for ECCC connects you to other people and it is a great way to give back. Making a difference in someone’s life while they are home bound can make a huge positive impact to that person and to you. Donna Duncan, vice president of ECCC, was presented with a check for just over $1,500 at the fourth annual Butts & Clucks Cook-Off on the Bay on Jan. 23. “ECCC gives special thanks to John Solomon, Apalachicola Chamber of Commerce, Team Uncle Bucks BBQ, Backyard Bro’s Buck Freeman and Tim Maloy and everyone that purchased a blue bucket to help ECCC,” said Duncan. “Thank you for your support!”

According to the US Census Bureau, there are 4.4 million adults over age 60 living in Florida, which represents 23 percent of the state’s population. By 2030, the US Census predicts that 32.5 percent of Florida’s population will be 60-plus. What better time than now to strengthen the services available to elders in our county? In Franklin County, 24.1 percent of the population is over age 65.
ECCC’s mission is to bridge the gaps in services to those over age 55. Our January project, in addition to serving lunch “to-go” Monday through Friday to those in need, has been to collect donations to fill laundry baskets with household goods. The baskets are filled with items that food stamps won’t purchase such as toilet paper, paper towels, tissues, toilet bowl cleaner and brush, dishwashing soap, dish cloth & towel, toothbrush and toothpaste, lotion, potholder, soap, all-purpose cleaner, etc.
Recent donors and volunteers include Weems Memorial Hospital, Dr. Rex Whiteman, New Life Church, Veterans Service Officer Charles Elliott, Glenna Smith, Janine Gedman and Kathy Kirkland, Sharon Sleeper, Tami and Allen Schwenk, Heather Mapp and members of the Forgotten Coast Parrot Head Club. We thank the many organizations, donors and volunteers that have contributed to this basket of joy that will bring smiles to the recipients.
“We are so appreciative of the support we receive from our community as donations to provide food and goods for the older members of Franklin County,” said Bonnie Kellogg, past president of ECCC.

February is Black History Month, National American Heart Month and Valentine’s Day. In the past years, Elder Care Community Council of Franklin County celebrated these events at the Holy Family Senior Center in Apalachicola. We look forward to being able to gather again at the Center for lunch, celebrations and activities.

Meet the Editor
David Adlerstein, The Apalachicola Times’ digital editor, started with the news outlet in January 2002 as a reporter.
Prior to then, David Adlerstein began as a newspaperman with a small Boston weekly, after graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He later edited the weekly Bellville Times, and as business reporter for the daily Marion Star, both not far from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.
In 1995, he moved to South Florida, and worked as a business reporter and editor of Medical Business newspaper. In Jan. 2002, he began with the Apalachicola Times, first as reporter and later as editor, and in Oct. 2020, also began editing the Port St. Joe Star.
