Search on for missing St. George Island vacationer

Law enforcement officials are searching off the coast of St. George Island for a New York woman, here on vacation, who they believe may have drowned.

In a 1:30 p.m. Facebook Live video. Franklin County Sheriff A.J. Smith  said that personnel from his department, along with officers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commision  and staff from Dr. Julian Bruce St. George Isl;and State Park, were conducting a search in the water and along the beach for a missing woman.

The sheriff’s office identified the missing woman as Staci Peterson, 33,  five-feet, four-inches tall with brown hair.

“We suspect she may have gone into the water and not come out,” said Smith. “We do not suspect any foul play.”

He said the search is being assisted  from the air by a drone squad from the Florida Highway Patrol.

“We certainly are hoping she hasn’t drowned but it looks like that may be a possibility.” Smith said.

The sheriff asked that anyone with information to contact the sheriff’s office  at 850-670-8500.
