Mullet toss on the island Saturday
The annual St. George Island Mullet Toss, sponsored by the Blue Parrot Oceanfront Cafe, will be this Saturday, June 10, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on the beach behind the restaurant. All proceeds benefit the Apalachicola Bay Charter School. For a $30 entry fee you get a unique Mullet Toss T Shirt, and two mullet to throw. Visitors and locals compete for prizes and bragging rights. There are prizes for the longest throws in the men’s, women’s and kids divisions. Downtown Port St. Joe, Highland View Beach clean ups
On Saturday, the public is invited to participate in two clean up efforts in town.
Volunteers will be meeting at Sweet Bunz Donuts at 7 a.m. EDT to pick up trash/debris from Reid Avenue.
Then, at 9 a.m., volunteers are invited to take part in a similar event on Highland View Beach. Volunteers will meet at Port St. Joe RV Resort.
D-Day exhibit opens at WWII museum
The Camp Gordon Johnston World War Museum in Carrabelle has opened a special exhibit Commemorating D-Day, running from the anniversary of D-Day, June 6, until Saturday, July 15. The museum is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no charge for admission, but donations are gladly accepted.
This exhibit includes the personal papers from the family of Capt. John E. Mellen, who commanded the 818th Amphibious Truck Company and was with them from their training at Camp Gordon Johnston, from late 1943 until early 1944, through the end of the war and beyond. The 818th was attached to the 1st Engineer’s Special Brigade and landed on Utah Beach, June 6, 1944.
The Carrabelle Beach Assault video, filmed by the U.S. Signal Corps, will be shown throughout the day running every 10 minutes, with several well-recognized photos of the Carrabelle Beach assaults taken from this footage. Also during this exhibit will be an interview of a 28th Infantry Division veteran that trained at the Camp, the three World War II military vehicles and the replica Higgins Boat on display.
Glass with Class to close Friday
Prepare to be delighted and bedazzled as The Joe Center for the Arts becomes a proverbial house of glass.
“Glass With Class” features the works of eight glass artists and runs through Friday, June 9.
Decorative and functional pieces in all forms, colors and sizes make up this show, crafted by area artisans using hot, warm and cold processes in their studios.
The exhibit will be open to the public Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. EDT and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. EDT.

David Adlerstein, The Apalachicola Times’ digital editor, started with the news outlet in January 2002 as a reporter.
Prior to then, David Adlerstein began as a newspaperman with a small Boston weekly, after graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He later edited the weekly Bellville Times, and as business reporter for the daily Marion Star, both not far from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.
In 1995, he moved to South Florida, and worked as a business reporter and editor of Medical Business newspaper. In Jan. 2002, he began with the Apalachicola Times, first as reporter and later as editor, and in Oct. 2020, also began editing the Port St. Joe Star.
