This weekend in Gulf and Franklin
It’s Labor Day Weekend, and the Forgotten Coast has a lot going on to celebrate. Here’s a list of some of the local events happening in Gulf and Franklin Counties.
Scallop and Music Festival
The 26th Annual Florida Scallop, Music & Arts Festival will be held Labor Day Weekend Saturday, September 2, and Sunday, September 3, 2022. Come out and enjoy arts, crafts, live music, food vendors, a beer tent and more. Click here for more details
Pork out to fight breast cancer
The 10th annual Pork Off for Pink Out will be Monday, Sept. 4 at Paddy’s Raw Bar on St. George Island, with plenty of BBQ pork and rib plates on sale, plus lots of live music and family fun activities. All proceeds will go towards the 11th annual Pink Out on Friday, Oct. 6 to benefit the Franklin Needs group which provides free mammograms and other services to local residents. The event will begin at 6 p.m. at Paddy’s Raw Bar at 240 East Third Street.
First Friday Sip and Shop
The Gulf County Chamber of Commerce and a handful of local businesses will be hosting a First Friday Sip and Shop event on Friday, Sept. 1 on Reid Ave. from 5 to 7 p.m. EDT. Enjoy adult beverages, light hors d’oeuvres, great deals and good times.
Carrabelle’s Country Market Saturday
The Crooked River Lighthouse continues its Country Farmer’s Market this Saturday, Sept. 2 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Lighthouse Park, 1975 Hwy 98 West, Carrabelle. Members’ Art Market
The Joe Center for the Arts invites the public to its third annual Members’ Art Market.
Guests will have the opportunity to meet the artists while viewing works of all kinds in a wide variety of style, subject and media.
The show runs through Sept. 15. Admission is free. The Joe is located at 201 Reid Ave in downtown Port St Joe. Its hours are Wednesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. EDT and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. EDT. The Joe Center for the Arts is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to educate, exhibit partner and inspire through the arts.
Museum opens new Midway exhibit
Camp Gordon Johnston World War II Museum in Carrabelle has opened a special exhibit about the Battle of Midway and Doolittle’s Raiders that will be on display until Saturday, Sept. 30.
The museum at 1873 Highway 98 West is open every Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 pm. Admission is free, but donations are gladly accepted. The museum can be reached at (850) 697-8575 or at museum@campgordonjohnston.com
Salt Air Farmers Market
Shop local farmers and artisans. Let your family enjoy art pieces and the amazing flavors of fresh veggies, sweet tupelo honey and vine-ripened fruit. Open the first and third Saturdays of the month, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. EDT in downtown Port St. Joe.
Meet the Editor
David Adlerstein, The Apalachicola Times’ digital editor, started with the news outlet in January 2002 as a reporter.
Prior to then, David Adlerstein began as a newspaperman with a small Boston weekly, after graduating magna cum laude from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. He later edited the weekly Bellville Times, and as business reporter for the daily Marion Star, both not far from his hometown of Columbus, Ohio.
In 1995, he moved to South Florida, and worked as a business reporter and editor of Medical Business newspaper. In Jan. 2002, he began with the Apalachicola Times, first as reporter and later as editor, and in Oct. 2020, also began editing the Port St. Joe Star.
