Carrabelle man killed in U.S. 98 crash

An early Saturday morning crash on U.S. 98 in Franklin has left a Carrabelle man dead and an Apalachicola man in serious condition.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a 26-year-old Carrabelle man was driving in a sedan west on U.S. 98, near Hidden Beaches Drive, at about 7:26 a.m. when he attempted to pass a vehicle in front of him. He then struck a pickup truck driven by a 46-year-old Apalachicola man.

The Carrabelle man “attempted to improperly/unsafely pass an uninvolved motorist by exiting the westbound lane of travel, crossing the double solid yellow lines, continuing to  travel west in the eastbound lane of travel, before abruptly swerving right,” read the FHP news release.

As a result, the truck struck the sedan’s left side. The report said the Carrabelle man succumbed to his injuries, while the Apalachicola man, who was wearing his seatbelt, was transported to the hospital in serious condition.
