Village spared, but massive flooding in spots
Hi Y’all, it is good to be back after evacuating to Biloxi, Mississippi on Wednesday of last week. More so, because the Lanark area was spared, this is the first hurricane in the 10 years I have lived here that I evacuated, leaving with visions of Mexico Beach in my head.
Coming home to see there was no damage was bittersweet, realizing that our neighbors in the Big Bend had been damaged again. Prayers go out to them and please consider making relief donations. You can do this locally through the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. I understand that several loads of supplies will be taken to our affected neighbors. I pray that the hurricane that is now forming will dissipate and go away.
I did come back to some different kind of devastation in our village. The flooding I reported last week was worsened by Helene. According to Paul and Barbara Rohrs, the residents tried, on their own, to pump out some of the water with rented pumps that were pumping 17,000 gallons a minute which was making a small dent in their problems. The residents have finally received some much-needed help. The Northwest Florida Water Management District has come to their aid by having several pumps have been brought in. The road you can now see in the pictures was cleared of water by this pumping that started Saturday. Thank you to the St. James Lanark Volunteer Fire Department volunteers who have pitched in any way they can to move some of this water.
The Lanark Village Golf Club will have their once-a-month yard sale this Saturday, Oct. 5 on Heffernan Drive in their parking lot across from Chillas. You can bring donations on that day. Starting time is 8:30 a.m. ET
The Lanark Village Association will have its first official members’ meeting since April on Monday, Oct. 7 at Chillas Hall. The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. If you want to be involved in the nominating process, please attend this meeting. You can also email LVA at Lanarkva@yahoo.com for more information.
The Lanark Village Golf Club will have its members’ meeting on Thursday, Oct. 10 at the Lanark Village Boat Club building starting at 5 p.m.
Love Lanark, and be safe!
