Lady Seahawks down Lincoln in opener
Under the direction of a new coach, the Franklin County Lady Seahawks softball team opened with a shutout over Lincoln, followed by a loss to Wakulla.
Senior pitcher Sarah Ham allowed just one hit on the night, a single by the Lady Trojans’ Kayleigh Eikeland, and struck out five over four innings in the away game Feb. 18.
The junior varsity Lady Seahawks won 8-4.
“I am pleased with how our girls played last night; it was a great way to start the season,” said coach Dirk Strunk. “In softball you don’t have time to savor the victory, especially when you are playing Wakulla on Thursday. We have one day to prepare for a team that has great pitching.”
Against Lincoln, Franklin County exploded for 14 runs in the top of the fourth to finish off the game.
Ham smacked two doubles and drove in four runs on three hits. Eighth grader Shasta Butler had two hits, including a double as she drove in one run. Junior Alexis Webb had two hits and two RBI, junior Mateah McClendon two hits, sophomore Lilah Millender
One hit and one RBI and senior Micahlyn O’Neal one hit.
At Wakulla, the Lady Seahawks managed just one hit, a single by Butler, as they fell 3-1.
“Wakulla is a great program with a rich softball history,” said Strunk. “I was very pleased with the fact that girls were not intimidated by Wakulla.
“Our girls played hard and Sarah pitched a great game,” he said. “I am pleased with how our girls are playing.”
The Lady Seahawks scored their one run in the top of the sixth inning playing small ball. “I should have done it earlier in the game,” said Strunk. “We have some girls who can run and I should have used it to our advantage earlier.”
Ham struck out six and walked one in a complete game as she gave up two earned runs on five hits.
