Holiday concerts open Ilse Newell season

The Ilse Newell Fund for the Performing Arts opens its 2022 concert series with  “Christmas! Classical to Jazz,” this Friday and Sunday, Dec. 10 and 12.

The holiday concert features the Bay Area Choral Society with Dana Langford, conductor, plus celebrity guest accompanist/pianist Bob Malone, and singer/guitarist Rachel Hillman.

Malone, dubbed “a keyboard wizard” by New Yorker magazine, is well-known from his keyboard playing with John Fogarty, plus backup sessions with Ringo Starr and Avril Lavigne. His songs and playing have been heard on popular TV shows including “NCIS New Orleans,” “Entertainment Tonight,” and “The Hallmark Channel Movies.”

His recording of “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” was the theme used for the movie trailer for The Grinch, and he’ll be performing it at this holiday concert.

Hillman is well known locally for performances at music venues on the Forgotten Coast. She lives in Tallahassee where she plays guitar and sings at weekly concerts with the Tallahassee Swing. Her music spans jazz, blues and contemporary pop and she’s often been compared with Norah Jones, Amy Winehouse, and Joni Mitchell.

She’ll be singing and playing some favorite Christmas carols and popular holiday favorites to herald the holiday music season on the Forgotten Coast.

For nearly 35 years the Bay Area Chorale Society has launched the Ilse Newell Season each December with a holiday concert. This years’ program will delight with a mix of classical holiday pieces, favorite Christmas carols, jazz selections and popular holiday music.
