Boys basketball celebrates Final Four season

They didn’t win it all, but with a Final Four appearance, and a loss to the eventual Class 1A state champion, it was a pretty darn good year.

Coach Ray Bailey celebrated the Seahawks’ 20-8 season, and district and regional titles, with a banquet at the high school May 31.

Named as Offensive Player of the Year, and the team’s Most Valuable Player and top Scholar Athlete, was senior Owen Poloronis, while senior Ta’shawn Jones took Defensive Player of the Year honors.

The Most Improved Player of the year was senior Jaidyn Rhodes, while the Seahawk Award went to junior Ethan Kembro. “He’s a utility guy who does all the little things for us,” said Bailey. “It does not show up in the stat book but he did a lot of other things that helped us win.”

Bailey said the team is now at work to see if it can bring in former Seahawk standouts Adrian Jones and Carlos Morris in assistant coaching roles

The players this summer are working out in the weight room with the football team Monday through Thursday from 8:30 to 10 a.m, and then having informal practice sessions at 4 p.m. at the Nest.

Bailey is planning on taking a group of players to Rome, Georgia on June 9, where they’ll practice with players from former Seahawk coach Nathan West squad Friday night, and then play three games at Berry College on Saturday.

On June 15 and 22, the Seahawks will travel to Cottondale for some games against the Hornets and other teams.

The AAU games are shut down during June but some Seahawks may be playing with those teams in July, he said.
