The Christmas season opened with a breath of fresh air from the North Pole, as temperatures dropped as low as 41 degrees in Apalachicola Friday.
But the cold didn’t deter an enormous crowd to gather in Apalachicola’s Riverfront Park in the afternoon for the annual arrival, the day after Thanksgiving, of Santa Claus aboard a shrimp boat.

City commissioners Despina George and Anita Grove joined with staffers from the Apalachicola Bay Chamber of Commerce, sponsor of the event, in giving out hot dogs and popcorn to the many families on hand. As the sun set, Grove, in her role as mayor pro tem, lit the shrimp net Christmas tree that graces the park.
