Car flips over on Commerce Street

A one-car accident early Monday morning in downtown Apalachicola that flipped over the vehicle has sent an Apalachicola man via helicopter to Panama City.

According to Apalachicola Police Chief Bobby Varnes, a small car driven by Edward Allen Baker, 59, struck a Duke Energy box across from the drive-through lot at Centennial Bank on Commerce Street and then flipped over.

“It’s still under investigation,” said Varnes. He said initial indications are that a medical issue may have prompted the crash.

The Apalachicola Volunteer Fire Department responded to the crash and the driver was soon transported by helicopter in serious condition to Ascension Sacred Heart Bay in Panama City.
